Overview of waterproof makeup ingredients:
Waterproof makeup contains certain ingredients that help it stay on the skin longer and is less likely to be rubbed off by water, sweat or tears. Here are some of the most common ingredients that may be found in waterproof makeup:
- Silicones: Silicones such as dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane are found in many waterproof products. They create a waterproof barrier on the skin that prevents water from penetrating the makeup.
- Waxes: Various waxes such as carnauba wax and beeswax are used to thicken and stabilize waterproof formulas.
- Polymer film formers: These ingredients, such as acrylates copolymer or PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone), create a film on the skin that makes the makeup waterproof.
- Water-repellent pigments: Special pigments that have been treated with water-repellent properties can be used in waterproof makeup to increase durability.
- Alcohol: Alcohols such as denat alcohol can help makeup dry faster and make it waterproof. However, they are not suitable for all skin types.
All of these ingredients are usually formulated in an oil-soluble manner or are easily broken down by oils and oil-based cleansers:
- Silicones: Silicones are usually hydrophobic, meaning they don't mix well with water, but they are easily soluble in oil-based cleansers. Using an oil cleanser will effectively strip away the silicones they contain.
- Waxes: Waxes are also hydrophobic, so they can be removed well with oil-based cleansers. These cleansers can dissolve and strip away the waxy components in makeup.
- Polymer film formers: Most polymer-based ingredients used in waterproof makeup are usually not water-soluble, but they are usually soluble in oil-based cleansers.
- Water-repellent pigments: Even water-repellent pigments can be removed with oil cleansers because these pigments are not oil-repellent.
- Alcohol: Alcohols are usually easily soluble in oil-based cleansers.
